Kanda Sushi at 3637 Thousand Oaks Blvd, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, United States, is the kind of sushi spot that quietly earns attention through skill, freshness, and a deep respect for traditional Japanese dining. Set in an unassuming strip mall location, it may look simple from the outside, but the experience inside is focused, refined, and clearly built around quality fish rather than flashy rolls or heavy sauces. This is a place for diners who appreciate clean flavors, precise preparation, and sushi that lets the ingredients speak for themselves. The chef shows a strong understanding of seafood, with daily selections that may include premium fish from Japan as well as standout West Coast options like Santa Barbara uni, ebi, and oysters from the Pacific Northwest. Many guests come for the specials board or the omakase experience, where each piece is prepared with care and served at its best texture and temperature. The sushi is often described as fresh, delicate, and rich enough that it does not need much soy sauce or wasabi. While Kanda Sushi is not positioned as a budget sushi stop, the value comes from the high-end ingredients, thoughtful sourcing, and the level of craftsmanship behind every bite. Nigiri lovers will especially enjoy the menu, while those seeking cream cheese-filled rolls, fried toppings, or overly sweet sauces may find the style more traditional than trendy. The atmosphere is calm and straightforward, allowing the food and service to take the spotlight. Staff and chef interactions add to the sense that this restaurant cares deeply about its craft. For anyone in Thousand Oaks or the Conejo Valley looking for serious sushi without driving into Los Angeles, Kanda Sushi offers a polished, ingredient-driven experience that feels personal, seasonal, and genuinely memorable.

I’m so glad I found this place. Yes it is the BEST sushi in Conejo Valley. The chef knows his fish. We got most of the specials on the board which were mostly from Japan. I will say that it was expensive but so worth it. Maybe stick to the nigiri on the menu and it won’t cost so much. But I’m so glad I do not have to drive into LA for great sushi. I’m a fan.

My wife and I have travelled the world, lived in many cities and are sushi snobs. Since moving back to the area, it has been an absolute challenge and disappointment with finding great quality sushi and omakase that is not insanely overpriced and underwhelming. Then we found Kanda Sushi. It is in a bit of a strip mall like most things out here. It is unassuming at first glance and traditional in its style and selections. It is not the cheapest option but well worth the price when you consider that the quality is super high end fish from Japan and locally sourced west coast (Santa Barbara Uni & Ebi and Seattle Peuget Sound Kumomoto Oysters). Every single piece was fresh, flavorful and does not require soy or wasabi - it melts in your mouth! You can tell that the chef and staff really care about what they do and maintain highest quality and service. Our Omakase was about $140 per person for about 16-18 pieces of some of the freshest sushi I have had in quite some time! If you want a bunch of rolls with weird sauces, pickled bits, cream cheese and fried stuff - this is not the place for you. You will be denied service and honestly deserve it. But if you want a traditional experience with a real chef who respects quality and the craft - give Kanda a chance and be prepared to drop $100+ per person for an incredible experience. We will be returning again and again to join earlier in the day with even fresher and more bountiful options since the menu is sourced daily. If you cannot splurge for a bottle of Kubota - go with the Kikusui (chilled) as a great option. Thanks chef & kanda staff - Arigato Gozaimasu!

I've tried sushi at every good sushi place in Ventura County and this place has the absolute best quality sushi. You will not find fancy rolls here all gunked up with sauce so that you can't tell if you're eating good sushi or road kill. Kanda is a very traditional Japanese-style sushi bar. The star here is nigiri sushi. It's pricey but worth every cent. The chairs at the sushi bar are very comfortable. And that's definitely the preferable place to sit, not at a table. There's always good conversation to be had with the longtime, faithful clientele. And good sushi recommendations. Good place to impress a sushi-loving date if you've got the dough. Omakase (chef's choice) is a great choice here. You can choose an upper limit dollar amount or just indicate when you are full. Be prepared to be amazed. If you go to any top end sushi bar in L.A., some of which only serve omakase be prepared to have the chef tell you what you're going to eat & how to eat it. If you want rolls drowned in eel sauce, etc. there are plenty of places that do that, don't come here and expect it.

Excellent sushi with a talented chef. Make no mistake, this is legit Japanese cuisine and a cut above the average sushi bar. First, the chef had fresh selections on hand that aren’t common for average restaurants. He was doing Amaebi and fresh Uni, as well as multiple types of premium tuna. This type of quality is getting harder and harder to find. If you love sushi, you should support places like this that are producing authentic Japanese cuisine using traditional ingredients. Friendly and talented chef. Impressive selection Noodles and Veg options Great saki list!

Authentic Japanese experience available at 2 PM for small talk, private consideration of important life decisions, or enjoying the wait for someone. A shocking, unexpected entrance into an impressive, realistic somewhat formal Japanese environment. Given the observation and experience above, a small note inside the establishment reminds patrons that hot dogs are not served here!

I've haven't been to japan yet but I've had sushi all over the world and this is the best I've had so far. Not the usual quick innexpensive sushi environment, you pay more, but you get a unique eating experience from someone who is a master of their craft. I don't live in cali but eating here is one of the highlights of my trip, and can't wait to go back when I am in town again.

Kanda Sushi is a must-try for anyone craving authentic sushi. From the fresh, high-quality fish (much of it from Japan!) to the skilled and friendly chef, everything about this place is fantastic. This is the closest you'll get to experiencing true Japanese sushi without flying to Japan.
