Abear’s Cafe at 809 Bayou Black Dr, Houma, LA 70360, United States, is the kind of Cajun restaurant that feels warm, local, and full of character from the moment you walk in. It has that comfortable, family-style atmosphere where the food feels rooted in Louisiana tradition, and the table already sets the tone with Cajun essentials like Tabasco sauce and pickled jalapeños ready to go. One of the first things that stands out is the soft po’boy bread, served with a welcoming touch that makes the meal feel generous before the main dishes even arrive. The menu leans into hearty Cajun favorites, with dishes that bring big flavor, homestyle comfort, and plenty of local personality. The okra gumbo is a strong highlight, served in a large bowl with a traditional roux base that gives it a deep, satisfying taste. For po’boy lovers, Abear’s Cafe delivers especially well, whether it is shrimp cooked just right or a fresh oyster po’boy packed with flavor. The seafood tastes fresh, the portions feel filling, and the sides and soups carry the same bold, well-seasoned style as the main plates. What makes this place even more memorable is the friendly service, with staff who help create a relaxed, welcoming experience that feels less like a rushed meal and more like being invited into someone’s home for real Cajun cooking. For visitors exploring Houma or locals craving familiar Louisiana flavors, Abear’s Cafe offers a dependable mix of comfort, flavor, and Southern hospitality in a setting that celebrates the heart of Cajun dining.

First time visit. Great lil friendly hometown restaurant since 1963. I ordered the catfish platter. Really good and plenty of fish to take home. Loved the bread that was served. Great salad and fries as well. Great atmosphere and friendly customer service. I will return soon!

We went to Abear's Cafe and enjoyed some live music on a Friday. Food and service were both good. Enjoyed the shrimp poboy, and my husband liked their fried oysters. Update: came back and tried the roast beef. It was pretty good too!

awesome experience for some authentic cajun cuisine. a group of us showed up at 6pm on a Friday - they had live music and the place was busy. felt like we were eating in somebody's living room, lots of locals who clearly frequent the place. food was great, i had the chicken & sausage gumbo which was delicious. they have won the award for best local gumbo something like 7 years in a row. server was funny and helpful.

A Cajun food heaven for Houma. The food is ranked #1 for what it serves, in many categories. Home style cooking, fried seafood, sandwiches, poboy, hamburger steak, potato salad, gumbo, stew, desert, all made in the kitchen from scratch. Sure it is not a 5 star type restaurant, but for it's type/style, it is 5 star. Soda and beer on real ice! Got to come here and just enjoy, especially when they have a band playing, 5 to 9 on some weekends. A must visit if you have friends visiting Houma.

I honestly have no clue how I found out about this place. Wherever I saw it, I knew I had to come. I even made a stop at a different museum before coming here and they told me to come here to eat, but to check Facebook to see if they were open as there was recently a death in the family. I got the special of the day. Red beans and rice with potato salad. For dessert I got the peanut butter pie with chocolate. The whole meal was amazing and it felt like the whole place was family. I would recommend to anyone visiting the area. Those who live here already know.

Great Cajun food. As you can see with the menu a wide variety of seafood. Atmosphere is diffenately “ down the bayou Last time had shrimp and crab stew...very good. Just here there again 4/29/22. Food was great with good Cajun music/ dance if you want. Just a note if you want to order wine. There are just 2 choices…red or white and both ice cold…but good
